The idea is simple: you are going to Snow Bombing in Mayrhofen anyway. Munich is 2.5 hours away by train and one of the great cities in Europe. It takes almost no extra cost and almost no extra effort to build 3 days in Munich into the front of the trip before heading into the Alps. The result is a 10-day arc that is two trips in one: a proper European city break and an Alpine festival week. Here is how to build it.
The full arc
The structure that works best, tested by a group of six people from Miami, is roughly this: fly into Munich, spend 3 nights in the city, take the train to Mayrhofen on day 4, spend 6 nights in the Alps covering both the festival and a day or two on the mountain, then fly home from Innsbruck or back to Munich.
Total time: 10 nights. Total cost per person from Miami: around $2,500 all-in including flights, hotels, festival pass, and transport between cities.
Munich: days 1 to 3
Fly into Munich (MUC). Lufthansa operates direct from Miami. Most US and Canadian cities connect through Frankfurt, Amsterdam or London.
Stay in the Altstadt or Isarvorstadt for a first visit. Both put you walking distance from the main sights and the best food. Glockenbachviertel is the neighbourhood with the better bars and a more local crowd.
Day 1: the old town and a beer hall. Arrive, walk Marienplatz and the Altstadt. The Viktualienmarkt food market is the best lunch stop in the city centre. In the evening, go to Augustiner Klosterwirt on Augustinerstrasse rather than the Hofbräuhaus.
Day 2: the English Garden and Schwabing. The English Garden is one of the largest urban parks in the world. Find the Eisbach wave where surfers ride a standing river wave year-round. The Chinese Tower beer garden is the classic afternoon stop.
Day 3: day trip or city. Neuschwanstein Castle is 2 hours from Munich and worth every cliché written about it. Or stay in the city: the Deutsches Museum is the best science and technology museum in Europe.
Munich to Mayrhofen: day 4
Take the morning train from München Hauptbahnhof to Jenbach. Around 90 minutes, 30 to 50 EUR per person booked on DB or OBB in advance. At Jenbach, transfer to the Zillertalbahn narrow-gauge railway to Mayrhofen in around 40 minutes. Total journey under 2.5 hours.
For a group of 6, a private transfer by minivan costs around 300 to 350 EUR total, cheaper per person than 6 separate train tickets and easier with ski bags.
Mayrhofen: days 4 to 10
Mayrhofen is a proper Austrian alpine village that happens to host one of Europe's most distinctive festivals each April. Snow Bombing runs across multiple venues: day stages on the mountain accessible by gondola, the Brückenstadl barn venue, the Ice Bar, and various club nights running until dawn.
The mountain. The Penken area above the village is the main ski terrain, accessed by gondola from the centre. If your group does not ski, the gondola still goes up and the mountain day stages during Snow Bombing are fully accessible without skis.
Apres and nights. The sequence: Pilzbar and Elchbar at the top of the Penken from 2pm, gondola down to the Ice Bar at the base, then Brückenstadl for the evening live music. Scotland Yard pub runs until the early hours. The Sporthotel Strass basement club keeps going until dawn.
Getting home
Route back through Munich (MUC) by train (same 2.5 hour journey in reverse), or fly from Innsbruck (INN) which is 80km from Mayrhofen. Innsbruck has direct connections to London, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, and Vienna.
Group trip tips
- Book Snow Bombing accommodation the moment it goes on sale. Mayrhofen fills out months in advance.
- Use a group transfer from Munich. A minivan is meaningfully easier with bags and ski gear.
- Pre-arrange ski hire. Book online before you arrive. Walk-in hire during Snow Bombing is slow.
- Carry cash in euros. Munich is card-friendly. Mayrhofen apres bars vary.
- Build a rest day into Mayrhofen. Six nights of Snow Bombing is a lot. Use one day for a valley walk or spa.
How to extend the arc
West to Innsbruck and Salzburg. Both are under 90 minutes from Mayrhofen. Innsbruck is a proper alpine city with a beautiful old town. Salzburg rewards 2 nights minimum.
South to Vienna and Donauinselfest. Vienna is 4 hours from Mayrhofen by car or train via Innsbruck. If your trip ends in late June or early July, Donauinselfest is the world's largest free music festival.
When to go
Peak powder season. Book 6 months ahead. Best skiing.
Late season pass. Softer snow, cheaper beds, same festival.
Red Bull Ring is 90 minutes from Mayrhofen. Add Vienna for Donauinselfest.
Drop Munich, spend more time in Vienna. World's biggest free festival.
Flip the arc: start in Munich for Oktoberfest, continue to the Alps.
