Wonderfruit Festival is in Pattaya, 90 minutes from Bangkok. Here is how to spend 4 days in Bangkok properly — the food, the temples, the night markets, and the logistics — before heading to the fields.
Bangkok is one of the world's great cities for eating, and the Wonderfruit Festival trip gives you the excuse to do it properly. Fly into Suvarnabhumi, spend 4 nights in the city, then take a minivan or taxi to the festival site in Pattaya. The contrast — Bangkok's density, heat, and noise followed by Wonderfruit's bamboo-and-forest minimalism — is part of what makes the trip work.
The food
Bangkok has more good food per square kilometre than anywhere else on Earth. The benchmarks: Jay Fai (Michelin-starred street food, 2-hour queue, worth it — the crab omelette is singular), Bo.lan (fine dining, royal Thai cuisine), Nahm (hotel restaurant with the most scholarly Thai menu in the world). For everyday eating: any vendor at Or Tor Kor Market near Chatuchak, the Ratchawat Market for morning bowls, and the general philosophy of eating wherever looks busy at 11am.
The temples
Wat Phra Kaew (Temple of the Emerald Buddha) — the most sacred temple in Thailand, inside the Grand Palace complex. Go in the morning before the tour buses arrive. The dress code is enforced (covered knees and shoulders) — sarongs are available at the gate. Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn) on the Chao Phraya west bank — best viewed from the river at sunset, but climb the central prang for the view upriver. Wat Pho — the reclining Buddha, gold-sheathed and 46 metres long. Bangkok's most meditative temple experience.
The Chao Phraya
Bangkok's river is the city's original highway and the most efficient way to move through central Bangkok. The Chao Phraya Express boat runs from Tha Nonthaburi to Wat Rajsingkorn, stopping at all the major wats and the Asiatique market pier. The tourist boat costs 30 baht. Ride the length of the route at dusk — the river-facing temples illuminated, the longboats crossing the wake — and you have one of the genuinely beautiful Bangkok experiences.
Chatuchak Weekend Market
One of the world's largest weekend markets — 15,000 vendors across 35 acres. Open Saturday and Sunday 9am–6pm. Antiques, clothes, plants, food, ceramics, art. Structured into numbered sections (Section 2–26) by category. Go in the morning before the heat becomes unreasonable and bring cash.
Nightlife
Bangkok's nightlife is layered: the tourist-facing entertainment districts (Khao San Road, Nana, Silom), and the more interesting local scene in Ekkamai, Thonglor, and RCA. For the Wonderfruit crowd specifically: Beam (underground electronic club, the most internationally regarded venue in Bangkok), Glow (techno, older venue, tighter sound system), and the rooftop bars in Silom (Vertigo at the Banyan Tree for the view).
Getting to Pattaya/Wonderfruit
Minivan from Ekkamai bus terminal — 90 minutes, 120 baht. Taxis will quote 1,500–2,000 baht — Grab (Thai ride-hailing) to Pattaya costs around 1,000 baht and is more reliable. Wonderfruit runs festival shuttle buses from Bangkok in the days before the festival opens — check the festival website for the current schedule.
Practical notes
- December heat. Wonderfruit is in December — Bangkok's coolest month (28–33°C). Still hot by most standards. Dress for the heat, hydrate, and avoid the 11am–2pm sun where possible.
- The BTS Skytrain and MRT cover most of the tourist areas. A taxi from the airport to central Bangkok costs 300–400 baht.
- Cash is essential for markets and street food. ATMs are everywhere. Best exchange rate: SuperRich or Vasu exchange booths, not airport kiosks.
