Bonnaroo is America's great communal festival — 700 acres of Tennessee farmland, 65,000 people, and a camping culture that makes the music feel like the reason everyone is already in the same place.
Bonnaroo is the festival that rewired American music culture when it launched in 2002. It proved there was a massive audience for a multi-day camping festival with diverse programming — jam bands, hip-hop, electronic, country, comedy — at a time when most American festivals were single-day shows. Two decades later the camping culture it created is the template everything else follows.
The campsite is the festival
This is the thing Bonnaroo first-timers consistently underestimate. The Centeroo (the fenced festival area with the stages) is excellent. But the campsite — the 700 acres surrounding it where 65,000 people set up for the week — is where Bonnaroo actually lives. Elaborate themed camps with shade structures, communal cooking, and decorations accumulate over the week. The social world of the campsite is continuous: it runs while the stages are dark, it continues after the last set, and it is the reason people come back year after year to the same section of the same field.
Arrive early. Bonnaroo camping opens Thursday for a Thursday-night to Sunday-night festival. The best camping positions go fast. A Thursday arrival means you are set up and oriented before the music starts Friday — everything is easier from that position.
The stages
What Stage — the mainstage. Open air, 80,000 capacity. Friday and Saturday night headliners. The production is excellent. The field spreads wide — good sightlines from far back.
Which Stage — the second stage, with headliners that rival the What Stage on any other festival. The most interesting programming choice is always which of these two you pick on a conflict night.
This Tent and That Tent — the indoor tents for electronic, hip-hop, and alternative programming. This Tent in particular has hosted DJ sets that rank among the best festival moments in Bonnaroo history.
The Comedy Theatre — Bonnaroo books serious stand-up comedy as a primary programming category. The comedy lineup runs Thursday through Saturday and has included Dave Chappelle, Bill Burr, and virtually every major touring comedian.
The SuperJam
Sunday night at Bonnaroo. A guest music director — a different artist each year — assembles a house band and invites artists from across the weekend's lineup for a multi-hour collaborative jam session. Past SuperJam hosts include Dr. John, D'Angelo, Questlove, and many others. The combinations are unpredictable and often extraordinary. It runs from midnight into the early hours and is the festival's most beloved programming tradition. Do not leave Sunday before it happens.
Tennessee heat
Bonnaroo in June in Tennessee is hot and humid. Different from Coachella's dry desert heat — Tennessee humidity means sweat doesn't evaporate, the heat feels heavier, and the nights don't cool as dramatically. The practical response is the same: shade between noon and 4pm, continuous hydration, electrolytes, and loose breathable clothing. The campsite shade structures that experienced Bonnaroo campers build are not decorative — they are functional survival equipment.
Practical essentials
- A bike makes everything better. The campsite is large. A bike gets you between your tent and Centeroo in 5 minutes instead of 20.
- The wristband does not leave your wrist. It activates at entry and is your only proof of purchase for the entire festival. Guard it.
- Book car camping early. The standard camping is walk-in. Car camping (your vehicle adjacent to your tent) sells separately and provides significantly better logistics.
- The Centeroo layout. Download the map before you arrive — the tent city disorientation is real and the stage names (What, Which, This, That) do not help with spatial orientation.
