The AfrikaBurn Arc: Cape Town, the Karoo Desert, and South Africa's Radical Festival
AfrikaBurn is Burning Man's African regional — 14,000 people building a temporary city in the Tankwa Karoo desert for 7 days every April. Add Cape Town before and the Garden Route after for the complete South African arc.

Per person. AfrikaBurn ticket (~ZAR 2,500 / $135). Cape Town mid-range hotel (4 nights). Tankwa camping — bring everything. Garden Route accommodation (3 nights). South Africa is excellent value for US dollar holders. Flights from North America are the primary cost — typically routing through London or Johannesburg.
AfrikaBurn takes place in the Tankwa Karoo — a semi-arid desert plateau 4 hours north of Cape Town that receives less than 200mm of rain per year. Every April, 14,000 people build Tankwa Town from nothing and return it to nothing a week later. The Ten Principles are the same as Black Rock City: radical self-reliance, gifting, leaving no trace. The art installations — South African artists working at extraordinary scale in a landscape that makes Black Rock look modest in comparison — are the best argument for the event. And Cape Town, 4 hours south, is one of the most beautiful cities on Earth.
Cape Town: days 1 to 4
Fly into Cape Town International (CPT). Stay in De Waterkant or the City Bowl — both put you central for the best restaurants and within reach of the V&A Waterfront. Drive up Table Mountain by cable car (book the morning slot — the cloud descends by afternoon). Walk the Bo-Kaap coloured houses neighbourhood. The Neighbourgoods Market in Woodstock on Saturday morning is the best food market in South Africa. Drive the Cape Peninsula — Hout Bay, Chapman's Peak coastal drive, Cape Point, the penguin colony at Boulders Beach. The Chapman's Peak drive is the most beautiful coastal road in Africa.
AfrikaBurn: days 5 to 9
Drive north from Cape Town on the N7, then turn east into the Tankwa Karoo. The last 50km are gravel road. Pack your vehicle the night before departure — water (10 litres minimum per person per day in April heat), all food, camping gear, costumes, and MOOP bags. Nothing is sold at AfrikaBurn except ice. The art theme and community norms are established annually — check the official website for the current year's theme before planning costumes.
Garden Route: days 10 to 12
Drive east from Cape Town or south from Tankwa. The Garden Route runs 300km along the Indian Ocean coast — Wilderness, Knysna, Plettenberg Bay, and the Tsitsikamma forest. Knysna Lagoon is the centrepiece. The Storms River Mouth in Tsitsikamma National Park has the best forest-to-ocean hiking in South Africa. Bungee jump at Bloukrans Bridge (the highest commercial bungee in the world). Fly home from George Airport (GRJ) directly to Johannesburg then international, or drive back to Cape Town (5 hours).
