Comedy dominates the popular programming, with the Pleasance, Gilded Balloon, Assembly, Soho Theatre, and countless pub venues hosting stand-up from emerging acts to established names. The Fringe is where careers are made — Michael McIntyre, Bo Burnham, Hannah Gadsby, and virtually every major English-language comedian of the past 30 years has had a breakout Fringe run. The city of Edinburgh itself — the castle on its volcanic rock, the Old Town closes and wynds, the Arthur's Seat hillside — is at its most alive in August.
Edinburgh: days 1 to 7
Fly into Edinburgh Airport (EDI) or Glasgow (GLA) and take the bus east. Stay in the Old Town for Royal Mile access, or Leith (the port neighbourhood, now the best restaurant area) for authenticity and value. The Fringe programme is published online — buy tickets through the Fringe Box Office, individual venue websites, or (best value) show up at the venue an hour before for returns. The Royal Mile is the open-air Fringe overflow — performers previewing shows, street acts, and the entire city as a stage. The Stand Comedy Club and Monkey Barrel run alongside the formal Fringe venues and are the best places to discover emerging comedy. The Edinburgh International Festival (the formal arts festival, separate from the Fringe) runs simultaneously — orchestral concerts, opera, and theatre in the major venues. The Scottish National Gallery is free and has Velázquez, Rembrandt, and a strong Scottish collection. Arthur's Seat (the 823m hill in the middle of the city) takes 1 hour to climb and gives a view of the entire Edinburgh geography.
Highlands: days 8 to 10
Drive north from Edinburgh — 1.5 hours to Loch Lomond, the starting point of the West Highland Way. Continue north into the Scottish Highlands: Glencoe (the valley of the 1692 massacre, now a dramatic climbing area), Glen Etive (used in the Skyfall James Bond film), and Fort William at the base of Ben Nevis — the highest mountain in the UK. The Caledonian Canal runs through the Great Glen from Fort William to Inverness. Skye is 3 hours further north — the Quiraing rock formations and the Fairy Pools are the icons. Base at any B&B or small hotel in the Glencoe or Fort William area.
Glasgow: days 11 to 12
Drive south to Glasgow — 2 hours from Fort William, 1 hour from Edinburgh. Glasgow is a completely different city from Edinburgh — working-class, direct, with the best music scene and the best contemporary art in Scotland. The Riverside Museum (Zaha Hadid building, transport history) and the Kelvingrove Art Gallery (the best free museum in Scotland) are essential. The Barras Market and the Merchant City food and bar scene are the Glasgow social essentials. Fly home from Glasgow International (GLA).
