Lollapalooza was founded by Perry Farrell of Jane's Addiction in 1991 as a touring alternative festival. It settled permanently in Chicago's Grant Park in 2005 and has run there every August since. The festival now draws 400,000 people across four days across eight stages in the park, with the downtown Chicago skyline as the backdrop and Lake Michigan visible from the mainstage. The lineup covers rock, pop, hip-hop, electronic, and Latin music. Chicago repays serious attention beyond the festival days.
Chicago: days 1 to 5
Fly into O'Hare (ORD) or Midway (MDW). The Blue Line El train from O'Hare to the city centre takes 45 minutes. Stay in the River North or West Loop for proximity to the best restaurants. Architecture. Chicago has the most significant concentration of 20th-century architecture in the world — the Chicago Architecture Center runs river boat tours that cover 50 buildings in 90 minutes. The Cloud Gate (the Bean) in Millennium Park. The Rookery Building lobby (Burnham and Root, 1888, interior by Frank Lloyd Wright). The Tribune Tower with stones from world landmarks embedded in the base. Food. The deep-dish pizza debate (Lou Malnati's is the serious choice, Pequod's for the caramelized crust). The Chicago-style hot dog (no ketchup, seven toppings, a law unto itself). Alinea for the best tasting menu in the United States. The West Loop restaurant strip for the best casual dining in the city. Music. The Chicago blues tradition runs through Kingston Mines and BLUES bar on the North Side. Jazz at Andy's Jazz Club. Electronic music at Smart Bar.
Lollapalooza: days 5 to 8
Grant Park is downtown — walking distance from the Loop hotels and accessible by every CTA line. The Perry's Stage is the dedicated electronic music stage that runs continuously. The T-Mobile Stage and Bud Light Stage are the two mainstages. The park's layout means you can walk between most stages in under 15 minutes.
Indiana Dunes: day 9
1 hour south of Chicago, Indiana Dunes National Park has the most unexpected beach landscape in the Midwest — 25 miles of Lake Michigan shoreline, sand dunes up to 200 feet high, and hiking trails through dune blowouts. The post-festival day here, away from the city noise, is the correct recovery move. Drive back to Chicago for the flight home.
