The Melbourne International Comedy Festival launched in 1987 and is now the third-largest comedy festival in the world after Edinburgh and Montreal. 2,700 shows across 30 days in March and April, with Town Hall as the centrepiece venue and hundreds of pubs, theatres, and art spaces across the city joining the program. The Australian comedy scene — which has produced Hannah Gadsby, Jim Jefferies, Wil Anderson, and internationally sold-out performers for 30 years — is at its most concentrated here. And Melbourne is genuinely one of the world's great cities: the coffee culture, the laneway restaurant scene, the AFL, and the street art make it worth the journey independently of the festival.
Melbourne: days 1 to 8
Fly into Melbourne Tullamarine (MEL). The SkyBus runs to Southern Cross Station in 30 minutes. Stay in the CBD or Fitzroy for the best laneway access. Melbourne's laneways — Hosier Lane (street art), Centre Place, Degraves Street — are the social infrastructure of the city. The coffee: Melbourne's café culture is genuine and sophisticated — the flat white was invented here (debated, but claimed). The food: the Queen Victoria Market, Lygon Street Italian restaurants, the Vietnamese restaurant strip on Victoria Street in Richmond, the fine dining scene around the CBD. AFL football: the Melbourne Cricket Ground holds 100,000 for an AFL match — the game, the crowd, and the stadium are all extraordinary. Match tickets are available on the day for most games. Comedy festival: The Town Hall central venue, the Melbourne Town Hall Upstairs, and the Comedy Festival Club in Melbourne Town Hall are the hubs. Book the biggest shows 2–3 months ahead. Great Ocean Road: days 9 to 12
Drive west from Melbourne along the coastal B100 — the Great Ocean Road runs 243km through surf towns, ancient rainforest, and the dramatic Southern Ocean cliffs of Port Campbell National Park, culminating in the Twelve Apostles limestone stack formations. Stop at Torquay (surf capital of Australia), Lorne (best beach town on the route), Apollo Bay (fresh seafood), and the Otway Rainforest before reaching the Apostles. Helicopter flights over the Twelve Apostles are the premium experience — the aerial view of the stacks against the green-blue Southern Ocean is extraordinary. Drive back to Melbourne along the faster inland route (3 hours on the Princes Highway) for the flight home.
