Sunburn Festival started in Goa in 2007 and became Asia's largest and most internationally recognised electronic music festival. The annual Goa edition runs on a beach in December with headliners from the global electronic mainstream alongside Indian DJ talent. The surrounding India context — Mumbai's extraordinary urban energy, Goa's Portuguese colonial beach villages, and Kerala's backwater canal system — makes the arc surrounding the festival as compelling as the event itself.
Mumbai: days 1 to 3
Fly into Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International (BOM). Mumbai is the most cinematic city in the world — the Dharavi slum and the Antilia tower (world's most expensive private residence) within 2km of each other. Stay in Bandra West for the best restaurants and the most liveable neighbourhood, or Colaba for the heritage hotels and waterfront. Walk Marine Drive at sunset. The Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya (formerly Prince of Wales Museum) covers 5,000 years of Indian art and history. The Dharavi walking tours run by local guides are the most honest and humanising way to understand how the neighbourhood actually functions. The food: vada pav (the Mumbai street burger) from any roadside stall, the dosa at Café Mysore, the seafood thali at Mahesh Lunch Home.
Goa — Sunburn: days 4 to 7
Fly from Mumbai to Goa (GOI Dabolim or MOPA Manohar) — 1 hour. Goa's beaches divide into north (busier, more developed, more party-oriented: Baga, Calangute, Anjuna) and south (quieter, more beautiful: Palolem, Agonda, Patnem). Sunburn runs in the north — stay in the Vagator or Anjuna area for festival proximity. Goa's Portuguese colonial heritage runs through the Old Goa basilicas (the Bom Jesus Basilica houses the remains of St Francis Xavier) and the spice plantations inland. The beach shack food — grilled kingfish, prawn curry and rice, bebinca dessert — is the best casual eating in India.
Kerala Backwaters: days 8 to 12
Fly from Goa to Kochi (COK) — 1 hour 30 minutes. Kerala is India's most literate and most dramatically beautiful state. The backwaters — 900km of interconnected rivers, lakes, and lagoons running parallel to the Arabian Sea coast — are the defining landscape. Rent a traditional kettuvallam (houseboat) for 2 nights: slow travel through village canals, fresh seafood cooked on board, the backwater light at dawn and dusk. Kochi itself has the Chinese fishing nets at Fort Kochi (a 500-year-old technology still in daily use), the finest collection of contemporary Indian art at the Kochi-Muziris Biennale (every 2 years), and the best Kerala cuisine restaurants. Munnar in the Western Ghats (3 hours inland) has the highest tea estates in India and the best hiking. Fly home from Kochi International.
